1 super Band, 4 coole Typen, 5 gute Alben, 27 begeisterte Konzertbesucher und ein Interview das Einiges offenbart
Stellt euch vor, ihr kommt aus Kanada, seid Teil einer hinreichend talentierten Band, habt ein wirklich gutes Album - das Fünfte - produziert und seid auf Deutschlandtournee. Ihr spielt in Heidelberg, in Köln und in Berlin. Und in Hamburg. Und dann sind da 27 Gäste. Das ist keine besonders schöne Vorstellung und fühlt sich mutmaßlich nicht gut an. Wir waren Teil des 27-köpfigen Publikums, durften ein bombastisches Konzert erleben und haben nach der Show mit dem Sänger und Kopf der "Islands“ - Nick Diamonds - gesprochen.
Q: We just wanted to grab some beers and listen to good music. That worked
out great. Unfortunately we don’t know much about your band “Islands”.
So, why don’t you tell us something about you guys?
A: We are a cool band from Canada and basically we are the coolest band
which ever existed.
Q: That’s a clear answer. So how many albums have you already published?
A: We are so cool and so underground that we have five albums.
Q: Okay, so why do I only see one album here for sale?
A: Well, because all the other albums are on evil cooperations and evil
labels which we think are evil and shit. And this is the first record on
our own label. It’s the only pure record. Everything else is garbage.
Q: Does it have a name?
A: It does have a name. It’s called Manque Music, which is French for the
verb “missing”. It’s sounds and looks like a monkey.
Q: There is a label in Germany called Monkey Mafia, but that’s rather the
techno/dubstep type of thing.
A: Okay, we hate techno and we don’t approve techno music. But we love
monkeys, ‘cause monkeys are cool.
Q: We love Techno, but that doesn’t matter right now, so next question.
What’s your role in the band?
A: I am the writer and architect and the mastermind
Q: What was your motivation to produce the album?
A: I don’t know, I am loosing the plot. I don’t know what my motivation is.
Desparation, belonging, desire to feel to be part of something, to
communicate. I don’t know, I don’t care any more. I don’t give a fuck about
that business anymore. I am out, that is the last thing I will ever do and
the last record I will ever make. I'm gonna become a carpenter or an auto
mechanic. I don’t care about music. Music turned its back on me.
Die Reaktionen von Nick haben mir deutlich gemacht, wie schwer es heutzutage ist, als Band erfolgreich zu sein oder wenigstens ein einigermaßen auskömmliches Auskommen zu erwirtschaften. Auch wenn man schon fünf Platten veröffentlicht hat und einige Shows im Jahr spielt. Offensichtlich reichen musikalisches Talent, Coolness und mehr als genug Rampensau-Attitüde nicht mehr aus, um ein großes Publikum zu erreichen. All das ist bei "Islands" nämlich ausreichend vorhanden. Mir fehlen die Einblicke in die Mechanismen der Musikindustrie, aber ich vermute mal, dass das Wichtigste ein offenes und neugieriges Publikum ist, das im besten Fall zu Fans wird.
Und "Islands" machen es Einem damit nicht schwer. Musikalisch irgendwo zwischen "MGMT“ und den "Beach Boys" zu verorten, machen die Tracks auf "Ski Mask“ wirklich Spaß. Sowohl das etwas melancholisch angehauchte "Wave Forms" oder das etwas dramatischere "Becoming The Gunship" haben Ohrwurmpotential. "Nil" klingt nach ner frühen Beatles Platte "Shotgun Vision" ist experimentell genug, um auch den kritischen Musiknerd zufriedenzustellen. Das Ganze bringen die Typen live auch sehr gut und mit der nötigen Begeisterung rüber. Im Ernst, das ist ne gute Band, die mehr als 27 Gäste verdient und sogar noch ne Zugabe gespielt hat. Obwohl man ihnen dann auch irgendwann angemerkt hat, dass es sich vor 500 oder 5000 Leuten schon besser anfühlt, die Entscheidung für die Musik und gegen den Job in der Autowerkstatt oder am Bankschalter getroffen zu haben.
Deshalb mein Appell: Geht raus und schaut euch für kleines Geld unbekannte Bands an. Mit Glück erlebt ihr ein tolles Konzert, hört neue Musik und trefft nette Menschen. Im schlechtesten Falle trinkt ihr zwei Bier, lästert über die beknackte Frisur des Bassisten und geht nach Hause. Besser als in ner schlechten Bar zu sitzen, überteuerte Drinks zu trinken und belangloses Loungegedudel zu hören, ist es allemal.
